Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program
The Arthritis Foundation and Southern Indiana Rehab Hospital
co-sponsor a recreational program conducted in a heated pool. The
program provides the opportunity for persons with arthritis to meet
others and have fun.
Participants are led by trained personnel through a series of
specially designed exercises, which, with the help of the water's
buoyancy and resistance, can help improve joint flexibility. The
warm water and gentle movements can also help to relieve pain and
stiffness. The program was developed by the Arthritis Foundation in
collaboration with Southern Indiana Rehab Hospital.
LEADERSHIP
Those leading the classes have successfully completed a twelve-hour
specialized training workshop conducted by an approved Arthritis
Foundation trainer. Training includes teaching of the activities for
use by those who have arthritis, as well as general understanding of
and sensitivity toward arthritis and those who have it.
PARTICIPANTS
Any adult with arthritis may join the Arthritis Foundation
Aquatic Program. It is not necessary to know how to swim. People
with multiple or severe joint problems or who have had joint surgery
are encouraged to check with their physicians about the need for
special precautions.
