Car Seat Inspection Program

Southern Indiana Rehab Hospital provides free car seat safety inspections for members of the local community of southern Indiana and the Louisville metro area. SIRH has certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians on staff to ensure your car restraint system is properly installed. These technicians receive education and specialized training from the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA).

Is your child's car seat installed correctly? National studies indicate that 80% of all car seats are incorrectly used.

Common Mistakes

	Child is unsecured in restraint
	Restraint is not properly secured to the vehicle
	Rear facing seat is placed in front of an air bag
	Infant is placed forward facing and/or rear facing seat is placed forward
	Car seat installation errors
	Using second hand (inadequate or outdated) restraints

General Restraint Considerations

	Infants under one year of age and weighing less than twenty pounds should be secured in a rear facing, infant-only car safety seat at a 45 degree angle, with a five-point harness.
	Children older than one year and weighing more than twenty pounds can be moved to a forward facing position in a standard safety seat.
	Children who weigh over forty pounds can sit in a car booster seat. Depending on the child, most children need to use a belt-positioning booster until they are at least eight years old.
	It is safest if children under twelve years old ride in the rear seat.
	Child restraints 7 years old or older should be replaced.
