Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
COPD describes a group of lung diseases that include chronic
bronchitis, emphysema, chronic asthma and pulmonary fibrosis.
Symptoms of COPD may include coughing, wheezing, and shortness of
breath. Currently, there is no known cure for COPD. However,
research has shown that a pulmonary rehab program utilizing exercise
and education can be an effective intervention in the treatment of
people with these diseases.
How Pulmonary Rehab Helps
Through exercise and education, people in the Pulmonary Rehab
program will maximize their strength and develop strategies to
manage their disease, in the hopes of minimizing future
exacerbations.
The Rehab Process
There are three levels of Pulmonary Rehab corresponding to the
severity of the disease process. Phase I (Inpatient stay at SIRH),
Phase II (Day Hospital or Outpatient) and Phase III (Maintenance
Classes).
