Southern Indiana
Rehab Hospital Among First to Offer Breakthrough Rehabilitation
Technology
New Albany, IN (12/5/07) - Imagine technology so advanced it may
help patients who have suffered a stroke or other neurological
disorders regain lost mobility, while enabling them to achieve
greater independence than they believed to be possible.
This highly sophisticated technology is now a reality at Southern
Indiana Rehab Hospital (SIRH). Working with Bioness Inc., SIRH is
among the first in the country to offer this breakthrough therapy
and will serve as a regional evaluation and treatment site for
patients interested in trying out the new device.
Central nervous system injuries often result in foot drop—leading to
instability and difficulty walking. The NESS L300™ neuro-rehabilitation
system is a revolution in Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)
technology, designed to help patients experiencing foot drop to
regain mobility and help “normalize” walking and gait. The L300 uses
wireless communication to “talk” to its components, eliminating
wires and allowing the clinician the ability to fine-tune settings
while the patient is actually walking. This user friendly system is
appropriate for a broad range of conditions, including stroke,
traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and
incomplete spinal cord injury.
“The NESS L300 device is going to give us a huge advantage in
treating patients with these disabilities,” said Brad Kruer,
supervisor of Outpatient Rehab Services at SIRH. “We have the
cutting edge technology and people want what is new. We are one of
the first in the country to offer this type of rehabilitation and
that shows our patients we are trying our hardest to help improve
their lifestyles.”
The L300 compliments and accelerates traditional therapy. SIRH has
integrated this technology into both the outpatient setting and
acute inpatient rehab program. Patients using the L300 may show a
range of results including increased walking speed, improved balance
and stability, increased blood circulation, improved range of
motion, and an overall enhanced quality of life.
